First Grade

first gradeThe First Grade at Tekoppel Elementary School is comprised of two classroom sections. Our curriculum is focused on reading, mathematics, and writing. Reading is the number one goal in first grade. Children are involved in the five core reading components, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Our classroom environments are rich in literature, and our teachers utilize research-based strategies and align instruction with the Indiana Academic Standards set for first grade within a ninety-minute reading block.

In all academic areas a variety of instructional methods are used, including but not limited to:
  • Whole class instruction
  • Small group instruction
  • Individual conferencing
  • Phonics instruction
  • Traditional math - with hands on activities with manipulatives

Instruction is enriched with science, health, and social studies. Students are introduced to science, social studies, and health topics and are encouraged to explore these areas during guided instruction. We begin Spelling after Labor Day-stressing word families. In addition to the core subjects, one period per day is planned for music, art, or physical education. Students also have a computer/media class every week.
