1920s and 1930s

The Great Depression and Beyond...

In 1925, a drive for indoor plumbing was started. Due to the Great Depression, sufficient funds could not be raised to provide indoor plumbing so that project would have to wait.
In 1928, "The Mothers' Club" joined with the State Congress of PTA. Preschool examinations for children entering first grade were started for the first time. The great depression was just beginning, but Tekoppel's PTA was able to equip a kitchen in the basement and fed 55 children who were in desperate need. Food was furnished by the county and cooked by PTA members.
Finally in 1934, enough funds had been raised and indoor plumbing was installed at Tekoppel. Then in 1937, telephones were installed in the school making communication easier for parents. Kindergarten began in 1938 in the basement. Tekoppel was the first county school in the state of Indiana to have a public kindergarten.
